Chris Ellis is a professional consultant who practised for many years at the Criminal Bar in England as both prosecutor and defence counsel. Chris has taught law at both postgraduate and undergraduate level for 25 years, the last fifteen of which he has been based in Hong Kong. Chris was a personal student of the late Professor Sir John Smith QC (Smith and Hogan) and studied advanced criminal law under his tutelage.

Chris’s main subjects are criminal law, criminal procedure, evidence and criminal litigation. He has also taught the practical subjects of advocacy, drafting, negotiation and conference skills.

Chris has previously tutored at Hong Kong University on the LLB degree and on the BCJ (Bachelor of Criminal Justice) degree. During his career Chris has also taught criminal law to Hong Kong police officers, Correctional Services staff and Immigration Department employees.

For the academic year 2022/3 Chris will teach on the PCLL, JD and LLB programmes.

Chris received 2 nominations for Teaching Excellence Awards in 2016-17 and 2 further nominations in 2019-20.
