Founded by Professor David Donald at CUHK LAW in 2014, the New Ventures Legal Team (NVLT) is a law student support group collaborating with the University’s Pre-Incubation Centre (Pi Centre). NVLT is currently supervised by CUHK LAW Professors Jyh-An Lee and Dicky King Fung Tsang.
NVLT members and supervisors meet regularly to deliberate legal issues associated with entrepreneurship and how to help startup teams at the Pi Centre (Pi teams). NVLT frequently invites practitioners, entrepreneurs, and investors to discuss various legal aspects of entrepreneurship. Furthermore, NVLT holds bi-annual matching sessions with the Pi Centre so that each Pi team will be linked to one or two NVLT members, who will provide on-demand legal information for the team throughout the academic year. NVLT also organises seminars and talks given by NVLT members and practicing lawyers for the CUHK entrepreneurial community.
At CUHK LAW, students learn both the theoretical and the practical aspects of the law. As NVLT members and under the supervision of CUHK LAW professors, our students develop a solid foundation to deal with real life legal issues encountered by entrepreneurs. Since 2015, NVLT has worked with 76 Pi teams on startup issues. 50 Pi teams have incorporated their own companies while 45 have entered external incubation programmes. In this context, NVLT has accumulated deep institutional knowledge to provide legal solutions to support aspiring entrepreneurs. NVLT has provided extraordinary opportunities for CUHK LAW students to develop practical skills concerning transactional law and to appreciate the importance of legal knowledge in business value creation. It will continue to play a crucial role in the CUHK entrepreneurial community.
“Starting up when we were just students, we actually knew nothing about commercial law. NVLT members have helped us a lot in researching and answering the key legal questions and pointed out some potential legal traps that we might fall into. More importantly, they were responsible, dedicated and zealous to help us on the legal aspect even though they might have hectic schedules.”
“As a start-up company lacking legal knowledge, we got a lot of help from NVLT. They taught us how to correctly solve some basic legal issues of entrepreneurship. When we wrote the terms of use and contracts, they made very constructive comments.”
“Legal problems have always been a headache when it comes to new ventures. Without the legal support from the NVLT, we wouldn’t be able to launch our platform at ease.”
“NVLT and Pi Centre were founded in the same year. We have been growing together and working hand in hand. NVLT has provided us with commercial and corporate law workshops for equipping our startups and CUHK members. NVLT’’s support contributed significantly to our startups over the years. It meant a lot to the Pi Centre. We have been thankful for their endless support to our startup teams, PI Centre and the engagement to our startup community. We look forward to deepening and expanding our collaboration with NVLT.”
“Co-founding and leading the NVLT team was one of the highlights of my time during CUHK. The NVLT team provides great exposure to real-world issues faced by startups and entrepreneurs alike. Working with them is an excellent way to develop legal and commercial skills – and at the same time give back to the CUHK community. Now having practiced for several years, I can look back and point to some of the things I learned from the NVLT experience which still resound today.”
“NVLT has provided me with an avenue to hone real world lawyering skills in preparation for my career. The opportunity to work closely with several student startups and to assist with research on legal issues faced by entrepreneurs allowed me to develop essential practical skills, including interviewing clients, client counselling, client management, drafting and problem solving.”
