Prof. Steven GALLAGHER co-organised a webinar with the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL) on “Toppled Statues and Monuments: Perspectives on the Global Movement Confronting Heritage” on 16 July 2020.

The webinar discussed the toppling of the statue of Edward Colston in Bristol, England, and its pushing into the harbor by Black Lives Matter protesters during the George Floyd protests, and the call by the governing body of Oriel College in Oxford for the controversial statue of Cecil Rhodes to be removed.

Speakers considered heritage laws and statue politics in other jurisdictions such as Belgium, Ghana, India, and South Africa, as well as the wider role of heritage in reconciliation. A CUHK LAW alumna, Ms. Leanne Tse, from the M+ Museum, Hong Kong, presented on the law and policy in Hong Kong.
