The 18th Annual Conference of the European China Law Studies Association was held at the CUHK Graduate Law Centre from 19 to 21 September 2024. The conference brought together a diverse and interdisciplinary assembly of scholars and researchers to share their insights on recent developments in Chinese law. Approximately 150 participants from over 20 jurisdictions convened to discuss a wide range of topics, including legal issues concerning EU-China relations, Chinese jurisprudence and legal history, China’s role in the international legal order, the evolution of legal traditions and rule of law, constitutional law and human rights, sustainable development and the role of regulation in China, criminal law and criminal procedure, developments in Chinese corporate and commercial law, legal and economic issues of international investment, cyber security and data protection, intellectual property and Chinese law, digital governance and smart courts, administrative law and administrative procedure, environmental law and energy law, and law in the Greater Bay Area.
The keynote addresses were delivered by distinguished speakers, including Professor Björn Ahl from the University of Cologne and Professor Li Guo from Peking University, who shared their expertise and perspectives on critical aspects of China’s legal system and the development of Chinese law.
The conference fostered a vibrant atmosphere of learning and collaboration. Over 140 research papers were presented across 39 panel sessions, drawing a diverse audience comprising scholars, students, and legal practitioners. Attendees actively participated in discussions, with many engaging in spirited debates during Q&A sessions. Networking opportunities allowed researchers to connect, exchange ideas, and explore potential collaborations, further enriching the academic discourse surrounding Chinese law.
