Prof. Jyh-An LEE was quoted by the Financial Times in an article “Google blocks China adverts for sites that help bypass censorship” published on 1 April 2019.

Internet users in China may circumvent the Great Firewall and access overseas sites that authorities bar by using the the virtual private networks (VPNs). Recently Google has stopped promoting ads for two websites that review VPNs products to be used in the country. In the interview with Financial Times, Prof. Lee indicated that the move was a “signal to show kindness towards the Chinese government. Google has withdrawn from China before and that scene wasn’t pleasant, so if they want to come back again, they have to show a stronger ‘kindness’ signal.
