CCTL Transnational Legal History Group Seminar – ‘History of International Law and China: Eurocentrism, Multi-Normativity and the Politics of History’ by Prof. Maria Adele Carrai (Online)

After what has been defined by Chinese elites as ‘the century of humiliation,’ China has reclaimed the central stage in international affairs. Especially now that it has re-emerged as a great power, capable of shaping international norms in its own interests, new questions about the nature, history, and resilience of the so-called ‘international rule-based order’ and international law continue to surface. In light of recent scholarship developments, different approaches to the history of international law in China will be presented. While exposing the politics of history behind most of the historical constructions, the presentation provides some general remarks about these different methodologies and suggests unexplored areas that deserve further study.
