“After graduating from CUHK LAW, I followed the classic path: joined US Big Law, blink, and realise ten years have passed. I was home grown at the firm, worked almost a decade in corporate and financing, and eventually decided to do something highly unconventional in legal terms—pause.

I quit, took a career break, and briefly experimented with not having a deal timeline or a work phone. I went to NUS for an MSc in Sustainable and Green Finance—part intellectual curiosity, part self indulgence, and unapologetically in service of my ego—followed by a 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training, which added flexibility to areas of life (and fascia) previously unfamiliar with the concept.

I’m now back in practice in the offshore market, easing myself from broad corporate and financing work into a stronger focus on fund financing. The break didn’t derail my career; it simply reminded me that paths don’t have to be straight to be sound—and that balance is easier to talk about once you actually try to find it.”

“As a proud alumnus, I was profoundly delighted to return to my alma mater five years after graduation to attend the ‘Legal History in Asia and Beyond: Lessons from the Past for the Present’ Conference on 17–18 March 2026. I was greatly honoured to present my paper, ‘Naturalness of Ancient Chinese Law—Superstition or A Precious Gift from Our Ancestors?’, in which I shared in-depth reflections on the intrinsic logic and cultural connotations of ancient Chinese legal traditions.

The most heartwarming part of this homecoming was reuniting in person with my respected professors. Over the past five years, we have maintained steady email correspondence, engaging in thoughtful academic dialogues and intellectual exchanges despite the distance. After years of virtual communication, finally meeting them face-to-face was incredibly touching and rewarding.

“After graduating from the Juris Doctor programme at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, I was honoured to receive a fellowship offer from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) China Office. This opportunity brought me to serve as a Sustainable Procurement Fellow, where my work focuses on two main areas: international sustainable public procurement projects and rural revitalisation initiatives.

My fellowship experience has been deeply grounded in the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through daily engagement with project design and implementation, I have come to understand sustainability not as an abstract concept, but as a set of practical actions—from enhancing resource efficiency to conducting long-term impact assessments. I pay particular attention to responsible consumption and production, as these goals directly inform my work on supply chain sustainability and project empowerment.

“I’m Serena, a 2023 graduate of CUHK’s LLM in International Economic Law program. Following graduation, I joined Tian Yuan (Guangzhou) Law Firm, where I specialise in investment, financing and M&A.

Back in November 2023, I stood at a tough crossroads: should I stay in Hong Kong or move back to the mainland? Should I work as a law firm associate or an in-house counsel? The career advisors at CUHK offered invaluable guidance, advising that if practising law was my true calling, I should commit wholeheartedly to becoming a PRC lawyer. After all, there is no absolute ‘right’ choice; what matters most is listening to your inner voice.

Recently, I teamed up with my colleagues to close successfully a large-scale M&A project involving more than 100 companies. I also collaborated with partners to examine Hong Kong-related legal issues, with our insights compiled into two articles published on the firm’s official WeChat account. Covering topics from mainland creditors’ perspectives on the validity of Hong Kong company board resolutions and risk mitigation strategies, to cross-border insolvency guidelines including the recognition of Hong Kong winding-up proceedings in mainland China and creditor response tactics, drawing on the practical skills I gained at CUHK. I owe both my professional expertise and the courage to follow my heart to my alma mater, and I am fully committed to building a career as an investment and financing lawyer.”

“Since graduating from CUHK LAW, my path has led me from the classrooms of the Graduate Law Centre to negotiation tables spanning Hong Kong and Chinese Mainland. As a registered foreign lawyer focusing on cross-border dispute resolution, I navigate the intersection of diverse legal regimes and commercial practices.

A recent patent dispute between a Mainland company and an overseas corporation illustrated this well. Initially inclined towards Hong Kong litigation, the parties soon faced procedural hurdles—from jurisdiction over foreign entities to the costly authentication of overseas evidence—often resulting in protracted and expensive proceedings.

In such scenarios, arbitration has emerged as a preferred path for many, balancing flexible timelines with enforceable awards in both jurisdictions. Meanwhile, mediation is increasingly favoured when preserving business relationships matters, delivering efficient, relationship-saving resolutions.

Each case reaffirms that law is less about conflict than about connection—building bridges across parties, not just arguments. I remain grateful to CUHK LAW for grounding me in this mindset, and to helping my clients find the most appropriate way to resolve their disputes.”

“Since completing my LLM in International Economic Law at CUHK, my career has transitioned from senior roles within central banking and financial regulatory authorities to architecting the global strategy for Tachyon Group as its Founder and Group CEO. Under my strategic leadership, the Group has established a robust international infrastructure, recently reaching a monthly GMV of $44.8 million across its global markets—a significant milestone.

My experience in the digital economy has highlighted two critical shifts. First, in a volatile international climate, scaling a venture now requires deep mastery of multi-jurisdictional and international law as a prerequisite for any sustainable launch. Second, as global compliance standards become increasingly complex, a rigorous legal background offers definitive strategic advantage in building resilient operations.

My postdoctoral endeavours focus on teaching, research leadership, and curriculum development, with particular emphasis on international criminal law, public international law, and constitutional law. I am actively engaged in publishing in peer-reviewed journals, leading funded research projects, and contributing to international academic and policy-oriented initiatives. “I had a wonderful experience teaching at the Peking University Law School, delivering a lecture on Hong Kong Securities Regulation and Crime alongside my fantastic and highly experienced co-lecturer, Albert da Rosa.

During the lecture, we explored both the law and practical applications, discussing how Hong Kong’s robust rule of law, securities regulation and financial law development have propelled its status as an international financial centre. I was genuinely delighted to see PRC law students’ strong interest in Hong Kong law and the common law system.

To assess the cohort’s understanding, we conducted a quiz after the lecture. Just for fun, I challenged two popular AI models – Deepseek and GPT4 – to tackle the same questions.

Here are the fascinating results:
– Deepseek scored: 60%.
– GPT-4 achieved: 78%.
– Our remarkable PKU law students earned a median score of 76% and the top of the class scored 97%.

I was truly impressed by the cohort’s engagement, curiosity, and sharp analytical skills.

We were even treated to an unexpected yet beautiful snowfall in Beijing – yes, snow in March!”

Dr. Can Eken has published his book, Third-Party Funding in Investment Arbitration (Springer), which is based on his PhD thesis at CUHK LAW. The book provides a comprehensive analysis of third-party funding (TPF) in investment arbitration, examining its legal, procedural, and ethical implications. By assessing key case law, international instruments, and jurisdictional approaches, the book offers insights into the future of TPF in investment arbitration and its impact on global dispute resolution. Importantly, the book proposes the best practice guideline for funders operating in the investment arbitration regime. Dr Ekan spoke at CUHK LAW about his book on 31 March 2025. Roy is Head of APAC Legal and Regulatory Affairs at Houlihan Lokey (NYSE: HLI). He manages teams that provide legal advisory, secretarial, compliance, regulatory, data privacy and protection, transaction management and documentation support to businesses in Houlihan Lokey, primarily focusing on financial valuations, corporate finance and restructuring.

Roy is an experienced private banking and investment banking legal specialist working in the APAC banking industry. He was an executive director at Goldman Sachs focusing on private wealth management and lending before moving to Houlihan Lokey to head up the firm’s legal and compliance team in APAC. He is based in Singapore with regional oversight over Hong Kong, China, Singapore, India, Australia and Japan.

Before his career in the financial services industry, he was a legal practitioner of cross border international banking, restructuring transactions and corporate finance transactions in leading international White Shoe and Magic-Circle law firms including Latham & Watkins, Allen & Overy, and Gibson Dunn & Crutcher in major global financial hubs including Hong Kong, New York, London and Singapore.

Roy was called to the Hong Kong, Singapore and New York bars.

Roy graduated with Bachelor of Laws (First Class Hons) from King’s College London, UK. He further received his Postgraduate Certificate in Laws (PCLL) (Dean’s List) from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and his Master of Laws (LL.M.) “I was recently invited to speak at the APAC Legal Congress 2025 as an expert panelist on the topic, ‘How important is the role of in-house counsel in fighting cyber-crime?’ In a world where cyber threats are escalating in frequency and sophistication, in-house counsel now serve as key strategists in cybersecurity risk management, regulatory compliance and incident response. The discussion explored the evolving responsibilities of in-house legal teams in preventing, mitigating and responding to cyber threats. The panelists also spoke about how they collaborate with IT and security teams to ensure compliance with data protection laws and manage the legal and repetitional risks associated with cyber breaches. The attendees gained insights into best practices for cyber risk governance, emerging regulatory trends, and the Congress helped equip them with the knowledge and tools needed to play a proactive and strategic role in defending their organisations against cyber crime.”

In the same month, I completed the INSOL Future Leaders Program in Hong Kong, which deals with cross-border insolvency and restructuring. Taking Private International Law at CUHK has meaningfully inspired me to tackle real-world cross-border issues. I am also now helping with alumni events at my undergraduate university as one of its committee members and mentors. My new firm presents me with many exciting and challenging engagements. “I want to share one of my article (titled “Strategic of Interim Measures in Arbitration”) that had been reposted in some law issues and internal briefing in judicial system.

The interim measures, including but not limited to “freeze” the bank account of the counter party, are quite frequently used in arbitrations and litigations. Unlike that in the textbook, the interim measures are somehow regarded as one of the most crucial step in whole procedure of dispute resolution, and is deemed as particularly important in securing enforcement of an arbitration. I usually contrast international arbitration practices in China—where courts handle property, evidence, and behavior preservation—with international procedures influenced by common law traditions. I have noted that PRC parties face challenges when common law arbitrators prioritize tribunal-issued interim measures over court enforcement, leading to difficulties in enforcing such measures within China.

Key considerations include jurisdictional variances, the UNCITRAL Model Law’s shift toward allowing tribunals to grant interim measures upon application, and the burden of proof regarding what is “irreparable harm.” I also highlight tactical approaches, such as countering interim measure requests by disputing the likelihood of success on substantive grounds. The article is used to help the practitioners to adapt strategies, understand tribunal biases, and navigate evidentiary complexities to avoid disadvantages in international arbitration.
