Faculty Research Seminar – ‘Are Chinese new generation IIAs SDG-friendly?’ by Prof. Shixue Hu (Online)

Faculty Research Seminar – ‘Are Chinese new generation IIAs SDG-friendly?’ by Prof. Shixue Hu (Online)

This seminar will present the evidence on the fast yet imbalanced developments of Chinese recent international investment agreements (IIAs) entered into force 2012-2022 in the context of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The evidence shows increasing numbers and more diverse treaty-making tools used by China that promise to make its IIAs more SDG-friendly. The sustainable deficiencies in the more recent China’s IIAs are no longer systematically significant compared with its earlier generation agreements. That said, discrepancies and gaps remain large in the coverage and use of these tools. Based upon the results, Prof. Shixue Hu will discuss the strategic importance of The Comprehensive Agreement on Investment negotiation between China and EU which could streamline China’s treaty commitments and make future Chinese IIAs more SDG-viable.
