Property Law Seminar Series – ‘Equity and the Enforcement of Informal Land Contracts’ by Prof. Steven Gallagher, Prof. Alice Lee & Prof. Michael Lower (Online)

7 October, 2020

CUHK LAW hosted the Property Law Webinar ‘Equity and the Enforcement of Informal Land Contracts’ on 7 October 2020. It was delivered by Professor Steven Gallagher (CUHK LAW), Professor Alice Lee (Faculty of Law, HKU) and Professor Michael Lower (CUHK LAW). With over 300 registrations, this Webinar introduced the tools available for the enforcement of informal land contracts. It examined the doctrine of part performance by discussing the three important cases: The Hong Kong case of World Food Fair v Hong Kong Island Development Ltd [2007] 1 HKLRD 498; the Australian case of Pipikos v Trayans (2018) 265 CLR 522; and the English case of Steadman v Steadman [1976] AC 536.

The discussion will be followed up in Part II seminar on 11 November 2020, considering the overlaps with, and differences between, the doctrine of part performance and the doctrines of proprietary estoppel and common intention constructive trust.
