Female Legal Leaders Seminar (Online)

Following the great success of the inaugural Female Legal Leaders Seminar held on 4 November 2019, CUHK LAW now proudly presents the second Female Legal Leaders Seminar to be held online on 23 April 2020, 5:00-6:30pm. The online seminar will be delivered by three distinguished female legal leaders: Her Honour Judge Sharon Melloy, Family Court Judge, District Court of Hong Kong, Ms. Sylvia W.Y. Siu, Consultant of Sit, Fung, Kwong, Shum and Ms. Winnie Tam SC, former Chairman of the Hong Kong Bar Association.

About the Speakers:

Her Honour Judge Sharon Melloy
Her Honour Judge Melloy obtained the Theology B. A. from the Bristol University, United Kingdom in 1984 and passed the Common Professional Examination and Solicitor’s Finals (City of London Polytechnic) in 1986. She was admitted as a solicitor in England and Wales in 1989 and in Hong Kong in 1990. She was in private practice from 1989 to 1993 and from 1995 to 2003, and was the Assistant Professor, School of Law of the City University of Hong Kong since 2003. She has been sitting as a Family Court Judge in the District Court of Hong Kong since 2007.

Ms. Sylvia W.Y. Siu JP, M.B.A., LL.M, FHKIArb, FCIArb.
Ms. Sylvia Siu is a China-Appointed Attesting Officer; Immediate Past President of HK Institute of Arbitrators; Vice President of the Guangzhou, HK, Macao Arbitration & Mediation Alliance; Chair of the ADR Committee & Past President of HK Federation of Women Lawyers; Immediate Past President of HK Women’s Club; Deputy Chairman of the HK Society for Rehabilitation & Crime Prevention. She was the Vice Chairlady of Town Planning Appeal Board, Chair of Law Society’s CPD Committee & Pro Bono Committee, the ADR PCLL Examiner of HKU, Chinese U & City U. She was awarded the Law Society’s 2011 Distinguished Pro Bono Service Award & Social Enterprise Research Institutes Nobel laureate series’s Asian Social Caring Leadership Award (2017).

Ms. Winnie Tam, SC, JP
Ms. Winnie Tam is a former Chairman of the Hong Kong Bar Association (from 2015 to 2017) and a Senior Counsel in independent private practice. She is known particularly for her expertise in intellectual property, and civil and commercial dispute resolution. She holds the judicial appointment of Recorder of the Court of First Instance of the High Court of the HKSAR, in which capacity she devotes part of her professional time to sit as a judge, and serves the legal profession as Chairman of the Hong Kong Advocacy Training Council. Her other roles in public service include serving as Chairman of the Communications Authority and as Member of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Law Reform Commission, the Hong Kong Tourism Board, and the Chief Executive’s Council of Advisers on Innovation and Strategic Development.

The Female Legal Leaders Seminars aims to enhance awareness regarding gender issues. Speakers are invited to talk about their lives, their career highlights and how they have become who they are.
