Mooting

Our students take part in mooting to improve their research, writing and advocacy skills and confidence in court like setting. They annually participate in local, regional and international competitions with CUHK LAW’s support.

A “moot” is a mock legal proceeding in which you, our students, argue in a case specially designed to challenge and develop your oral and written advocacy skills. Mooting skills are essential if you wish to become a lawyer and competitions provide an excellent means for you to get a taste of what it is like to act as a lawyer in court in real life. It is a stimulating way for you to improve your legal research, legal reasoning, advocacy, communication and case analysis skills as well as your ability to think quickly on your feet.

For each moot a member of CUHK LAW will be appointed as an advisor to each team and will supervise their preparation and participation. Participating in some mooting teams may be credited towards degree completion.

PHILIP C. JESSUP INTERNATIONAL LAW MOOT COURT COMPETITION

The Jessup International Law Moot Court competition is the largest, oldest and best-known mooting competition in the world. Organised by the International Law Students Association, around 700 law schools from more than 90 countries participate.

The Jessup moot simulates a fictional dispute before the International Court of Justice (the judicial organ of the United Nations) concerning issues of public international law. The Jessup team will produce two written memorials and make oral arguments on behalf of both the applicant and the respondent.

Most teams participate in highly competitive national rounds in order to advance to the international rounds in Washington D.C. In Hong Kong, the local law schools compete in a regional round, typically in February or March, for the right to represent Hong Kong in the international rounds. More than 130 law schools participate in the international rounds, which are typically held in Easter week, in Washington D.C. USA.
