Digital platforms such as Google, YouTube, Facebook, Amazon, Airbnb and Uber play a central role in our daily lives and they are driving factors of economic, technical and social development. By creating a network between individuals and resources, they multiply possibilities of exchanging goods and services, pave the way for new (often hybrid) constellations between providers and users and open up new markets. At the same time, their disruptive business models displace established institutions and intermediaries, so that market structures and value chains are profoundly changed. Therefore, digital platforms pose diverse challenges to our economic, social and legal systems.

Against this background, the research workshops ‘Legal Implications of the Platform Economy’ are dedicated to analysing and discussing legal challenges of the advancing Platform Economy. After the Workshop I held in Danube-University Krems on 24 June 2019, the Workshop II will be co-hosted by CUHK Law, the University of Hong Kong (HKU) Faculty of Law, and the City University of Hong Kong School of Law at CUHK Graduate Law Centre. The workshop is co-funded under the Eurasia-Pacific Uninet (EPU) program in Austria.
