Prof. Jae Woon LEE elected as 3rd Vice-Chairperson at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Legal Committee, 39th Session

Prof. Jae Woon LEE was elected as the 3rd  Vice-Chairperson at the 39th Session of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Legal Committee held in Montréal, Canada on 25-28 June 2024.

ICAO is a specialised agency of the United Nations. Its Legal Committee is composed of legal experts designated as representatives of and by ICAO Member States. The duties and functions of the ICAO Legal Committee are:

  • to advise the ICAO Council on matters relating to the interpretation and amendment of the Convention on International Civil Aviation,
  • to study and make recommendations on such other matters relating to public international air law, and
  • to study problems relating to private air law affecting international civil aviation, to prepare drafts of international air law conventions and to submit reports and recommendations thereon.

Since its institution in 1947, the Legal Committee has prepared drafts which led to the adoption of 24 multilateral treaties, including the Tokyo Convention 1963 and the Montreal Convention 1999.

Prof. Lee will hold office for four years, working closely with Ms. Alice Serpa Braga (Chairperson, Brazil), Ms. Susanna Metsalampi (1st Vice-Chairperson, Finland), Mr. Mohammed Al Ruqaishi (2nd Vice-Chairperson, Oman) and Ms. Maria M. Memba (4th Vice-Chairperson, Tanzania) who were also elected at the meeting.
