Professor Mike McConville is a world-renowned scholar specializing in socio-legal empirical research in criminal justice. He is the author or editor of over twenty academic books and more than one hundred learned articles. The global character of his research has included path-breaking studies of criminal justice in the UK, USA and China including such topics as police interrogation, legal aid and assistance, indigent defence, plea bargaining, trial by jury, prosecution systems, defence lawyers and the judiciary. His latest co-authored books (with Professor Luke Marsh of CUHK) critically analyse the role of judges in criminal cases and the independence of the judiciary. He has undertaken advisory work in countries undergoing major social transition such as Latvia, Malawi, Turkey, and Peru.
