Faculty Research Seminar – ‘Carbon Tax in China’ by Prof. Jingyi Wang

Faculty Research Seminar – ‘Carbon Tax in China’ by Prof. Jingyi Wang

When the carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) adopted by the European Commission becomes fully effective in 2026, it will inevitably affect exports from China and other jurisdictions. The EU CBMA requires that imports into the EU bear a carbon price similar to that of items manufactured within the EU. In this seminar, the CBAM requirement will be critically discussed. Although China has a national carbon emissions trading system (ETS), its current carbon price is a mere fraction of that in the EU ETS. We will examine how China’s tax system could be reformed to address the challenges brought about by the EU CBAM.
