The field of fashion law has grown exponentially over the past few years, attracting a rising number of practitioners and in-house counsel. But what exactly is fashion law, and what are the specific legal challenges facing the fashion sector? In her talk, Professor Calboli—co-editor of the Handbook of Fashion Law (Oxford University Press)—will address these questions. She will summarize the book’s key contributions, delving into the critical issues of intellectual property, the circular economy, and the new legal challenges presented by Artificial Intelligence. Bringing together a diverse range of expertise, she will delve into an in-depth, critical, and strategic analysis of the fashion industry from a legal and multidisciplinary perspective. This presentation promises to be an engaging and thought-provoking exploration of how law intersects with this dynamic and ever-evolving industry.
About the Speaker:
Prof. Irene Calboli is a well-known authority in International Intellectual Property Law. She is Regents Professor of Law at Texas A&M University and holds several honorary and visiting appointments, including at the University of Geneva, SciencesPo Paris, the University of Melbourne, Singapore University of Social Sciences, National Law School Delhi, and Stanford University. A past Fulbright-Hanken Distinguished Chair in Business and Economics and a Fulbright Specialist Scholar in Cambodia, Irene has published 12 books and more than 100 articles, book chapters, and policy reports. Her latest edited book is the Handbook of Fashion Law (OUP, 2025 with E. Rosati). Irene is an Expert for the World Intellectual Property Organization, the World Trade Organization, the UN International Trade Center, and the European Union. She serves in leadership capacities in several professional organizations, including the American Branch of the International Law Association, the European Policy for Intellectual Property Law Association, the International Trademark Association, and the Association of American Law Schools. She is an elected member of the International Academy of Comparative Law, the American Law Institute, and the European Law Institute, where she is the co-chair of the IP special interest group with Professor de Werra. She is a graduate of the University of Bologna, Queen Mary University of London, and the London School of Economics.
