This talk explores the intersection of law, technology, and entrepreneurship in the digital age, focusing on the challenges of technology commercialization and intellectual property (IP) protection. Key topics include the commercialization journey, startup management challenges, effective innovation commercialization, and support in IP protection, compliance, and contract negotiation in the digital era. The role of legal professionals in navigating these areas is also highlighted. The session provides insights for students to embrace entrepreneurial thinking in their legal or entrepreneurial careers.

About the Speaker:

Ir. Dr. HL Yiu, former Chief Corporate Development Officer at the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP), has held senior leadership roles in overseeing incubation, technology clusters, manufacturing, and technology support infrastructures at HKSTP. In addition to his roles at HKSTP, he has run startups and held multiple positions in multinational technology corporations. Dr. Yiu spent over 15 years at Motorola Semiconductors and Freescale Semiconductors, where he served in various capacities from product development to business operation, including General Manager for Asia, Networking, and Computing Group. He is the inventor of the DragonBall microprocessor, designed for smart handheld devices such as PDAs and smartphones, and holds eight patents. Dr. Yiu earned his Bachelor’s and MSc in Electronic Engineering, as well as a DBA from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He also holds an EMBA, MSc in Finance, and JD from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, along with an LLM from the University of Hong Kong. He is a Fellow Member of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.
