Posted on 7 April, 2009

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is delighted to announce that a team of law students from the LLB degree programme, Cheung Wai Nam Justin (LLB Year 3) and Wong Pui Yan Zizz (LLB Year 3), won the Joint University Mooting Competition 2009 organized by the Advocacy and Mooting Society of the Student Union of the University of Hong Kong in March 2009, in which a total of 21 teams coming from The University of Hong Kong (HKU), City University of Hong Kong (CityU) and CUHK participated.

A “moot”is a mock legal proceeding in which students argue an appeal in a case specially designed to challenge and develop their oral and written advocacy skills. This competition provides an excellent means for students with an interest in law to get a taste of what it is like to act as lawyers in an appeal before real judges. The team was supported by the Undergraduate Law Society of the Student Union of CUHK, Professor Swati Jhaveri and LLB classmates.

This year’s moot problem concerned defamation. A preliminary round was held on 28 Feb and the semi-final together with the final match were held on 14 March. To know more about the competition, please click this to link to the report written by the winners.
