Prof. Eliza MIK conducted a seminar titled “Why should contracts be smart?” at the HKU Law and Technology Centre on 11 November 2024. The seminar confronted the popular theories surrounding the benefits of expressing contractual documents, or parts thereof, in the form of code. After an overview of the conflicting definitions of so-called “smart contracts,” Prof. Mik focused on the technical challenges of a replacing traditional legal prose with programming languages as well as the uncertainties surrounding the conversion of source code into machine code in the context of Blockchain-based smart contracts.
