JIA Yishu, Monica
Hong Kong

(IEL LLM 2013)

Monica is a 2012-13 IEL graduate. She qualified in the PRC in 2016 and is now working as in-house legal counsel for a financial institution in Hong Kong. Having completed a part-time PCLL programme in 2021, Monica is starting her two-year training contract as an in-house trainee solicitor with the goal to get dual-qualified. Monica is a frequent participant of CUHK LAW online events.

Thank you for organising so many interesting seminars, which I found very useful and practical for my work and life!, she says.

“Over the past academic year (September 2020 – July 2021), I had a wonderful experience pursuing a postgraduate LLM degree at University College London (UCL).

Personally, it has been an unforgettable year for me with all the difficulties I could not have imagined. For instance, I arrived in London on the very day the national lockdown was announced and most lectures were shifted to online learning!

Nevertheless, the online learning platforms allowed us to build a new and unique sense of unity. Recognising that we were in it together, I was blessed to be surrounded by extremely friendly flatmates and “online” friends. I also picked up new hobbies (e.g. home workouts, cooking) to keep myself motivated during lockdown.

I would like to congratulate everyone for making it through the tough academic year. Hopefully we will continue to grow stronger together in these unprecedented times.”
