Matt Cheung practised in leading law firms in London and Auckland, New Zealand, before returning to Hong Kong. In legal practice he was primarily a banking and finance litigator specialising in civil fraud. He also practised in other areas, including administrative law, intellectual property, information technology and international trade.

Matt joined CUHK LAW with considerable teaching experience. He was a part-time tutor of Legal Theory and Jurisprudence at the University of Auckland. He also taught for three years at the College of Law (now the University of Law) in Moorgate, London. Subjects he taught there include Civil and Criminal Litigation, Business, Commercial Dispute Resolution, Banking and Debt Finance, and Legal Writing and Drafting. At the College of Law he was the Associate Director of Design for Linklaters LLP’s London office. In this role he designed the Civil Litigation Legal Practice Course for the firm’s London office and taught and examined its trainees.

At CUHK LAW, Matt is a recipient of the Faculty Teaching Excellence Award. His teaching spans eight disciplines across the LLB, JD, LLM and PCLL as well as University and General Education courses. These subjects range from the theoretical (such as Jurisprudence & Ethics) to the substantive (for instance Civil Procedure and Contract) and to vocational disciplines (for instance Alternative Dispute Resolution and Trial Advocacy).

In terms of leadership roles, Matt served as Assistant Director of the PCLL Programme and then Programme Director of the Juris Doctor programme. He currently heads Alumni Affairs.

Beyond discharging his teaching and management duties at CUHK LAW, Matt has served as a Lead Examiner of PCLL Conversion Examinations (Civil Procedure). He has also sat on various CUHK college boards as well as Hong Kong legal education and Government advisory boards. These include the Standing Committee on Legal Education and Training and, by invitation of the HKSAR Department of Justice, the Steering Committee on Rule of Law Education.
