background: white; margin: 0cm 0cm 15.0pt 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black;\">In July, the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (\u201cUNCITRAL\u201d) adopted the Model Law on Automated Contracting (\u201cMLAC\u201d). The MLAC provides a legal framework for the use of automated systems\u00a0in international contracts, including through the deployment of artificial intelligence techniques and \u201csmart contracts\u201d, as well as in machine-to-machine transactions. It is intended to complement and supplement existing laws on electronic transactions, particularly those based on other UNCITRAL electronic commerce texts, which have been enacted in more than one hundred jurisdictions. The MLAC is the first legislative text to result from exploratory work conducted by UNCITRAL on legal issues related to the digital economy and digital trade. The instrument not only confirms the ability to conduct business by fully automated means, without any human involvement or review, but also recognizes that contractual terms might take the form of computer code and refer to external data sources that provide dynamic information. Crucially, it addresses important aspects of attributing actions of computer systems to the users of such systems and attempts to address\u00a0the risk of unexpected actions carried out by automated systems.
