\u201cA New Chapter in Humanitarian Education

Legal training comes alive in practice. I\u2019m pleased to share that I have joined the Hong Kong Red Cross (HEC) as a Corporate Training Facilitator, applying a legal lens to immersive, scenario-based workshops.

In this role, I will support the HEC in delivering engaging, interactive and scenario-based learning experiences for corporate participants. Programmes such as \u201c2030\u2022Climate Act\u201d invite participants to explore the humanitarian impact of climate change and reflect on environmental, social and governance issues. \u201cWarzone24\u201d offers a further opportunity to consider value-based decision-making in conflict situations, where rights, responsibilities, competing interests and human dignity may all be at stake.

These compact sessions place participants in realistic dilemmas where compliance, ethical decision-making and dispute resolution are tested in real time. They encourage participants to examine complex situations, consider different perspectives and reflect on the values that guide responsible action.

What I find most rewarding is witnessing legal reasoning evolve from abstract principle to practical choice: teams must apply rules, assess risks and consider human impact under time pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am delighted to share that I have devised the Hong Kong Citation of Legal Authorities and Materials (HKCLAM), the first unified legal citation guide for Hong Kong. HKCLAM provides practitioners, judges, academics, and students with a uniform standard for citing Hong Kong cases, legislation, and secondary sources, without the need to refer to foreign conventions. Moreover, the Hong Kong Chinese Citation of Legal Authorities and Materials (HKCCLAM) has also been launched recently, providing complementary guidance on citing sources in Chinese legal writing.

I am especially pleased to report that HKCLAM has been named and recognised in the fifth edition of the Oxford University Standard for Citation of Legal Authorities (OSCOLA), published in 2026, as the designated citation guide for Hong Kong primary legal sources. This marks the first time Hong Kong has had its own entry in the authoritative OSCOLA framework.

I warmly encourage fellow CUHK LAW alumni, current students, and practitioners across Hong Kong to adopt HKCLAM and HKCCLAM in their writing, teaching, and practice. A consistent citation standard strengthens the clarity and credibility of Hong Kong legal scholarship, and I would love to see our community help lead its adoption.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Director of Risk Control, Fenghe Capital<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am delighted to share that after completing my LLM in Energy and Environmental Law at CUHK LAW in July 2025, I have successfully transitioned from the biopharmaceutical sector to the clean energy industry \u2014 a career pivot I had long aspired to make.

Before joining CUHK LAW, I served as Director of Risk Control in the Compliance and Risk Management Department at an investment firm, specialising in biopharmaceutical investments. While I valued my work, I was increasingly drawn to the urgent challenges of energy security, the global energy transition, and the integration of ESG principles into investment decision-making. CUHK LAW’s LLM in Energy and Environmental Law Programme provided me with precisely the expertise I needed to navigate this complex landscape \u2014 from renewable energy regulation and carbon market mechanisms to climate risk disclosure and sustainable finance governance.

I am now serving in the same senior capacity at a private equity investment firm in Shenzhen, focusing exclusively on clean energy investments. In this role, I evaluate not only commercial viability but also the environmental and social impact of our portfolio companies, ensuring alignment with ESG frameworks and supporting China’s broader energy transition objectives.

I am deeply grateful to CUHK LAW for equipping me with the knowledge and perspective to contribute meaningfully to the clean energy revolution \u2014 a mission at the intersection of energy security, sustainability, and responsible investment that I hold dear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAfter graduating from CUHK LAW, I followed the classic path: joined US Big Law, blink, and realise ten years have passed. I was home grown at the firm, worked almost a decade in corporate and financing, and eventually decided to do something highly unconventional in legal terms\u2014pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I quit, took a career break, and briefly experimented with not having a deal timeline or a work phone. I went to NUS for an MSc in Sustainable and Green Finance\u2014part intellectual curiosity, part self indulgence, and unapologetically in service of my ego\u2014followed by a 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training, which added flexibility to areas of life (and fascia) previously unfamiliar with the concept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m now back in practice in the offshore market, easing myself from broad corporate and financing work into a stronger focus on fund financing. The break didn\u2019t derail my career; it simply reminded me that paths don\u2019t have to be straight to be sound\u2014and that balance is easier to talk about once you actually try to find it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Covering topics from mainland creditors\u2019 perspectives on the validity of Hong Kong company board resolutions and risk mitigation strategies, to cross-border insolvency guidelines including the recognition of Hong Kong winding-up proceedings in mainland China and creditor response tactics, drawing on the practical skills I gained at CUHK. In such scenarios, arbitration has emerged as a preferred path for many, balancing flexible timelines with enforceable awards in both jurisdictions. Meanwhile, mediation is increasingly favoured when preserving business relationships matters, delivering efficient, relationship-saving resolutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I had a wonderful experience teaching at the Peking University Law School, delivering a lecture on Hong Kong Securities Regulation and Crime alongside my fantastic and highly experienced co-lecturer, Albert da Rosa.

During the lecture, we explored both the law and practical applications, discussing how Hong Kong\u2019s robust rule of law, securities regulation and financial law development have propelled its status as an international financial centre. I was genuinely delighted to see PRC law students’ strong interest in Hong Kong law and the common law system.

To assess the cohort’s understanding, we conducted a quiz after the lecture. Just for fun, I challenged two popular AI models – Deepseek and GPT4 – to tackle the same questions.

Here are the fascinating results:
– Deepseek scored: 60%.
– GPT-4 achieved: 78%.
– Our remarkable PKU law students earned a median score of 76% and the top of the class scored 97%.

The book provides a comprehensive analysis of third-party funding (TPF) in investment arbitration, examining its legal, procedural, and ethical implications. By assessing key case law, international instruments, and jurisdictional approaches, the book offers insights into the future of TPF in investment arbitration and its impact on global dispute resolution. Roy is Head of APAC Legal and Regulatory Affairs at Houlihan Lokey (NYSE: HLI). He manages teams that provide legal advisory, secretarial, compliance, regulatory, data privacy and protection, transaction management and documentation support to businesses in Houlihan Lokey, primarily focusing on financial valuations, corporate finance and restructuring.

Roy is an experienced private banking and investment banking legal specialist working in the APAC banking industry. He was an executive director at Goldman Sachs focusing on private wealth management and lending before moving to Houlihan Lokey to head up the firm\u2019s legal and compliance team in APAC. He is based in Singapore with regional oversight over Hong Kong, China, Singapore, India, Australia and Japan.

Before his career in the financial services industry, he was a legal practitioner of cross border international banking, restructuring transactions and corporate finance transactions in leading international White Shoe and Magic-Circle law firms including Latham & Watkins, Allen & Overy, and Gibson Dunn & Crutcher in major global financial hubs including Hong Kong, New York, London and Singapore.

Roy was called to the Hong Kong, Singapore and New York bars.

Roy graduated with Bachelor of Laws (First Class Hons) from King\u2019s College London, UK. “I want to share one of my article (titled \u201cStrategic of Interim Measures in Arbitration\u201d) that had been reposted in some law issues and internal briefing in judicial system.

The interim measures, including but not limited to “freeze” the bank account of the counter party, are quite frequently used in arbitrations and litigations. Unlike that in the textbook, the interim measures are somehow regarded as one of the most crucial step in whole procedure of dispute resolution, and is deemed as particularly important in securing enforcement of an arbitration. I usually contrast international arbitration practices in China\u2014where courts handle property, evidence, and behavior preservation\u2014with international procedures influenced by common law traditions. I have noted that PRC parties face challenges when common law arbitrators prioritize tribunal-issued interim measures over court enforcement, leading to difficulties in enforcing such measures within China.

Key considerations include jurisdictional variances, the UNCITRAL Model Law\u2019s shift toward allowing tribunals to grant interim measures upon application, and the burden of proof regarding what is “irreparable harm.” I also highlight tactical approaches, such as countering interim measure requests by disputing the likelihood of success on substantive grounds. The article is used to help the practitioners to adapt strategies, understand tribunal biases, and navigate evidentiary complexities to avoid disadvantages in international arbitration.
