Originally from New York City, Geoffrey Upton is an educator and scholar with diverse interests and professional experiences. Before joining CUHK, he was at Seton Hall University in New Jersey, where he served as undergraduate pre-law advisor and assistant professor of political science and also taught Torts and Professional Responsibility at the JD level. His extensive experience also includes teaching courses in public law, constitutional law, and political theory at UC Berkeley, Mills College, Stanford University Pre-Collegiate Studies, and Columbia University Pre-College Programs. Before entering academia, Dr. Upton practiced law in New York as a litigation associate at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP and Morrison & Foerster LLP, handling complex commercial disputes, regulatory investigations, intellectual property matters, and pro bono cases. He later served as legislative counsel to the New York City Council, advising local elected officials on legal and policy issues. His career started in journalism as a writer and editor, and he also spent a year living and working in Berlin as a Robert Bosch Foundation Fellow.
