The English version of the book “The Art of Law Teaching” was published in 2021. An Arabic translation followed in 2024, and the Chinese version has been published by Peking University Press in early 2026. In this seminar the translator of the Chinese version of “The Art of Law Teaching”, Professor Chi Ying will discuss key aspects of the translation process. Drawing upon many years of experience of translating foreign legal texts into Chinese, she will explain which criteria are important when selecting legal books for translation, the challenges to find the right publisher, linguistic aspects of legal translations, special translation techniques, and the future of legal translations in times of AI. Professor Chi Ying will also discuss the actual and potential merits of making (translated) foreign legal texts available to wider Chinese audiences. In the second part of the seminar the author of “The Art of Law Teaching”, Professor Lutz-Christian Wolff, will reflect on the development of law teaching since the publication of the English version of his book.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Chi Ying is a professor for Civil and Commercial Law and Comparative Law at the Institute of Comparative Law in China University of Political Science and Law. She earned her PhD degree in law from the University of Passau in Germany under the tutorship of Professor Ulrich Manthe. Her legal research focuses on Agency Law, Consumer Protection Law and Company Law. Her publications include the book “Agency Law – the Chinese and the German System Compared” which was sponsored by the China National Social Science Fund, and over 30 papers in major legal journals in Chinese, English and German. In addition to the translation of “The Art of Law Teaching “, she has translated “The History of Roman Law” (with Zhou Me) by Professor Ulrich Manthe and “The Legal Act” by Professor Werner Flume. Both works are widely cited by Chinese legal scholars. Dr. Chi Ying is admitted to practice in China and often works as legal consultant for Chinese foreign invested companies.
Lutz-Christian Wolff is a Wei Lun Professor of Law at CUHK LAW. He specializes in International and Chinese Business Law, Comparative Law, and Private International Law. He has served amongst others as Dean of the CUHK Graduate School (9/2014 to 8/2019) and as CUHK LAW Dean (10/2019 to 9/2024). He is admitted to practice in England & Wales and in Germany. CUHK
