Seminar- ‘Competition in Aviation after COVID’ (Online)

Few sectors of the global economy have been impacted by COVID as severally as the airline industry. Global air passenger traffic has more than halved. The International Civil Aviation Organization estimates that there will be a reduction in airlines’ global passenger operating revenue of between US$346 to US$385 billion in 2020. The focus of governments, regulators and international bodies has been combating the pandemic, ensuring the safety of staff & passengers and protecting the industry from collapse. It is inevitable that competition policy considerations have taken a back seat.

But what will the competitive situation look like after the risk of COVID diminishes and there is a gradual return to normal; will consumers continue to benefit from vigorous competition in the aviation sector? How should competition authorities, aviation regulators and other relevant government bodies protect and promote competition in the aviation industry after COVID? And what can we do now to lay the groundwork for doing so?

The Hong Kong Competition Commission (HKCC) is keen to know the answers to these questions and is convening a webinar to help it find out. The webinar will be co-hosted by the CUHK LAW and will bring together academics specialising in competition in the aviation industry with officials from competition and aviation authorities. By holding this webinar HKCC hopes to continue the implementation of its vision of “connect, collaborate, cultivate” which led to us establishing the “Competition Exchange“.

The webinar is by invitation only. All CUHK LAW members are welcome.
