Greater China Legal History Seminar Series – “From Matriarch to Mediator: The Roots of Hong Kong Mediation Practice” by Ms. Sala Sihombing.

In this seminar, Ms. Sala Sihombing will explore the roots of mediation within traditional mediation practice. What are the origins and beliefs which informed early practice?

The seminar will address how modern mediation developed in Hong Kong, including the theoretical basis for modern mediation practice.  Ms. Sihombing will also highlight the development of modern mediation in Hong Kong from the early origins in the construction industry to innovative practices being introduced in contemporary practice.

Ms. Sihombing will highlight the differences between traditional mediation and modern mediation practice.

About the speaker:

Sala Sihombing works primarily as a full time family accredited mediator (HKMAAL) and general accredited mediator (HKIAC, and HKMAAL), NMAS (Australia), FINRA (USA) and CEDR) and conflict management coach.  She is also a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK). She teaches at HKU as an adjunct lecturer in the LLM ADR programme teaching financial dispute resolution and co-teaching family mediation.

Upon qualification as a solicitor in 1995 in England, Sala returned to Hong Kong and worked in private practice focusing on criminal litigation and was admitted in 1996. In 1997, Sala moved in-house and worked for Peregrine and Credit Agricole Indosuez.  From 2000 to 2011, Sala worked in non-market risk management and product development on the equity trading floor at Morgan Stanley. In 2011, Sala left banking and attended Straus Institute, Pepperdine University to complete an LLM in Dispute Resolution.
