Professor Chaisse is an award-winning specialist in international economic law with particular expertise in the regulation and economics of foreign investment. He has frequently been invited by various universities or institutions around the world to present his research results and has written well-regarded and widely cited articles on topics ranging from the rise of sovereign wealth funds, the new trend of the EU investment law to the challenges of the WTO decision-making. He is also the author or editor of books and book chapters published by leading publishers, such as Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press and Routledge. In addition, he has published in the top refereed journals of international economic law, such as Journal of International Economic Law, Journal of World Trade, European Law Journal and Journal of World Investment and Trade, as well as in international law journals published by US universities such as Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Colorado. In recognition of his outstanding scholarly achievements to date, Prof. Chaisse received the CUHK Research Excellence Award in 2012. Apart from his academic activities, Prof. Chaisse regularly provides consulting service to international organizations, governments, private investors and multinational law firms on cutting-edge issues of international economic law.
Among his other projects, Prof. Chaisse, along with economist Dr. Christian Bellak, has created the BITsel Index, an innovative international research website focused on the impact of investment treaties on FDI flows. The BITsel Index allows a better analysis of the effects of investment treaties on capital flows and a finer appreciation of to what extent such agreements have driven investors’ strategies. Through the development of this Index, he has investigated the evolution of the international law of foreign investment across relevant agreements and aims to discern patterns of congruence and divergence across substantive disciplines and practices among regions, countries and major stakeholders, such as sovereign wealth funds.
Meanwhile, he is currently active in the following renowned organizations as Member, Expert Member or Associate Member: the Society of International Economic Law (SIEL), the UNCTAD World Investment Network, the Association for International Arbitration (AIA), the European China Law Studies Association (ECLS), the Asian Society of International Law (ASIL), the European Society of International Law (ESIL) Interest Group ‘EU as a Global Actor’, and the Asian WTO Research Network (AWRN).
Prof. Chaisse teaches mainly in the fields of international trade and investment law. He has also taught a variety of other courses ranging from constitutional law and legal research to world politics, international law and international economics. He has held visiting Professorships at the Institute of International Law in Wuhan University (China), Yokohama National University (Japan), George Mason University American College Programe (Switzerland), Vienna University of Business and Economics (Austria), Riga University (Latvia), IEP d’Aix-en-Provence (France), and Antwerp University (Belgium). He has also frequently been invited to give legal training courses for mid- and high-level officers in a number of Asian and European countries (such as the Malaysia Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations, the Asian Development Bank, the United Nations ESCAP, the European Commission, and the Verwaltungsakademie des Bundes (Austria).
