The Hon. Justice Susan Kiefel AC was born in Cairns (Queensland, Australia) in 1954. She was educated in Queensland and at the University of Cambridge, where she graduated with the degree of Master of Laws. Justice Kiefel was admitted to the Queensland Bar in 1975 and was the first woman in Queensland to be appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1987. She was appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1993 and, in 1994, she was appointed to the Federal Court of Australia. Justice Kiefel also held a commission as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Norfolk Island from 2004 and served as a Commissioner of the Australian Law Reform Commission. She was appointed a Justice of the High Court of Australia in 2007. Justice Kiefel was appointed a Companion in the General Division of the Order of Australia in 2011.
