The Faculty of Law of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) hosted The Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, P.C., Chief Justice of Supreme Court of Canada, and her spouse Mr. Frank E. McArdle, a lawyer and Executive Director of Canadian Superior Courts Judges Association, on 17 March 2016 at its Shatin campus.

Justice McLachlin and a group of CUHK Law students and professors exchanged their views on a wide variety of topics from the legislation process, constitutional interpretation, the role of judges in a democracy, academic freedom and freedom of expression, amongst others.  The students and faculty were able to share their observations regarding the most salient legal issues currently facing Hong Kong.  And Justice McLachlin was able to provide critical insights from the perspective of a seasoned adjudicator who has confronted similar issues in a different legal system that nevertheless shares many important features with that of Hong Kong.  CUHK students and staff were both honoured and enlightened by this lively discussion with one of the world’s leading jurists.
